Kataragama Perahera is one of the most colorful and sacred festivals in Sri Lanka. It is held annually in the town of Kataragama, which is a holy place for Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims. This grand procession is dedicated to God Kataragama, also known as Skanda.
The Perahera usually takes place in July or August and continues for several days. It includes traditional dancers, drummers, fire performers, and beautifully decorated elephants. The rhythmic sounds of drums and the graceful movements of dancers create a magical atmosphere. Many devotees walk long distances to attend this festival and receive blessings.
I participated in this Perahera continuously for five years. It was a unique experience in my life. After staying vegetarian for several weeks and practicing day and night without rest, we feel an amazing happiness when we dance in the procession.
In conclusion, Kataragama Perahera is not only a religious festival but also a celebration of Sri Lankan culture and unity. It is a wonderful event that attracts both local and foreign visitors every year.
